Welcome to Carinya Park!
We are a small American Miniature Mediterranean Donkey Stud located in Victoria. Coming from a background of horse-keeping, riding, equine welfare, and competition, we are naturally lovers of all things Equine. The American Miniature Mediterranean Donkey however, with its gentle and affectionate nature, and intelligent outlook, has really won our hearts. Our goal is to breed quality American Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys who possess excellent conformation and are true to the breed standard, and, just as importantly, who possess wonderful temperaments which endear them to their owners and make them much loved and valued family members. 'Carinya' is an Aboriginal word meaning 'happy home', and we certainly hope that we are succeeding in providing that for our Equine family! We hope you enjoy our site. Thank you for visiting. Our mission is to work towards breeding true American Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys, with bloodlines that extend back to the original imports to the US from the Mediterranean. We value the requirements laid down in the National Miniature Donkey Association Breed Standard, which include a range of qualities that are necessary for the future integrity of the breed.
It is important to us that we promote and preserve this unique breed, and not simply breed 'small Donkeys' who can be registered in the US as 'Miniature' by virtue of their height alone, (regardless of parentage), thereby attaining 'American' registration. There is a distinction between Australian Donkeys under 36" registered in America, and the breed/bloodlines of the American Miniature Mediterranean Donkey, i.e. Donkeys who have been imported from America. For this reason, our primary registration Association is the Donkey All Breeds Society of Australia Inc., who maintain an Australian Stud Book dedicated to the American Miniature Mediterranean, along with sub registries which record breedings of varying dilutions of the breed. The criteria for inclusion in this Stud Book being bloodlines, not purely height. (D.A.B.S.A also maintains registers for Miniatures, English & Irish, Australian Teamster, American Mammoth Jackstock, Pet & Performance, and Mules & Hinnies). Our particular passion is the American Miniature Mediterranean, and as breeders, it is our responsibility to preserve the integrity of this unique and charming breed. 'Miniature Donkey' vs. Miniature Mediterranean Donkeyfrom the National Miniature Donkey Association LANGUAGE MAKES A DIFFERENCE "In correspondence, advertising, articles we've all seen Miniature Mediterranean Donkey shortened to miniature donkey for convenience sake. Unfortunately, this shorthand fails to recognize the importance of their past and the decades of conscientious, dedicated breeding that's taken place since they first set hoof in our lives. The term miniature donkey describes a small donkey of any origin, however has been a catch all that's handy to use. In recognition and respect for their incomparable qualities as a Breed, their noble title . . . Miniature Mediterranean Donkey . . . is the only way to go." |
